The Kings of Herts Chorus extend a warm welcome to people who want to know more about singing close harmony in the barbershop style.

The chorus is constantly looking to recruit men who can sing. No great musical expertise is required (most of our members cannot read music) but you will need to show that you can hold a tune.

All you need is to be able to sing some notes when they are played to you, and enthusiasm to learn and to enjoy club activities. We will teach you the Barbershop techniques of harmony singing via our induction programme. Members of the chorus support each other in developing technique, and in enjoying group singing.

The age of members varies from teens to 70's. All that matters is that you can sing and enjoy group singing - everybody is welcome!

skills we aim for

  • Tone and Energy - a voice that is pleasant and contributes to both the chorus sound and volume.
  • Tuned Singing - a good sense of pitch for close harmony singing including uncommon pitch intervals.
  • Timing and Rhythm - singing that is synchronized with other singers.
  • Independent Voice - able to sing a different part to the singer next to you.
In addition we try to develop a good sense of harmony and how it works, as well as basic choreography for visual presentation when performing as a chorus.

Members are committed to perfecting their skills by practicing parts on their own, and by attending rehearsals and performances.
